CONCEPTS

You can be assured that your child's classroom will always be filled with new and exciting materials and activities for your child to enjoy. Learning Centers in each classroom provide a variety of opportunities for spontaneous experiences. Through various kinds of play and interactions, children learn the basic skills that make further academic and social skills easier to attain. There are planned programs and activities presented in our classrooms that promote development.

Page 2 Learning ConceptsEarly Literacy | Math Concepts | Cognitive Development | Language DevelopmentSocial Development | Emotional Development | Creativity | Large & Small Muscle DeveopmentEarly LiteracyOur balanced literacy program offers many exciting ways to foster children’s individual interests in reading and writing. Children experience a variety of shared, guided and independent reading and writing techniques each day. Our print rich environment is clearly labeled with signs, labels and charts in each classroom. This natural introduction to the written language develops the concepts of phonemic awareness, rhyming, directional movement, as well auditory and language skills. Our library is filled with books and story props to promote independent and shared reading. Our Writing Center is equipped with a large alphabet, letters, stencils, labels and a variety of writing utensils and activities to stimulate the developing writer’s interests.Math ConceptsOur “Hands On” approach to math allows children to develop an understanding of mathematics through their play. Structured and open-ended activities offer children an introduction to a variety of concepts. We use concrete materials and independent activity centered games to focus on numbers, sorting, counting,classification, ordering, comparing, measuring, graphing, patterning, adding, subtracting and problem solving. Measuring tools, unifix cubes, geoboards, pattern blocks, links and many other materials are available for discovery and exploration in the classroom’s learning centers and during teacher directed games and activities. This inquiry-based learning approach to math is essential in creating mathematical thinkers in our children.Cognitive DevelopementLanguage DevelopementChildren will be immersed in a language rich environment that will encourage them to use their language skills through interactions and conversations with their peers and their teachers. Within this relaxing and enjoyable environment, children are also encouraged to increase their verbal skills through such procedures as imitating, questioning, recalling, ordering and creating.Social DevelopementOur programs give each child the opportunity to develop acceptable social skills through interaction with children of similar ages. These skills are developed through both structured and unstructured activities and play. Sharing and cooperation are encouraged in each of our learning centers. Since being with other children may be a new experience for some, our teachers are always there for comforting, encouragement, advice and support.Emotional DevelopementIt is important for each child to realize that he or she is a special person with unique and interesting ideas and skills. Learning center experiences enable a child to express his or her ideas and to grow and develop at his or her own pace. The materials and activities in our centers allow each child to be challenged with new concepts that are designed for success. Every new and exciting experience shows a child that they are unique, capable and successful. This in turn will help build a positive self image.CreativityGiving children the opportunity to use their imagination is an important part of their individual cognitive development. The mind of a child is naturally open to new experiences, ideas and concepts. Fostering the individuality and creativity of each child is incorporated into each of our learning centers. Creativity can be seen in arts and crafts, block building, dramatic play, story telling, puppetry and many other types of play! This is the vehicle young children use to explore their own learning style and to discover individual strengths.Large & Small Muscle DevelopementOur indoor gymnasium and two large playgrounds allow for unlimited opportunities for large motor development. Swings, ladders, ropes, slides, sees saws, shovels, pails and plenty of space for running, skipping and playing are just some of the activities available for your child on our playgrounds. Your child also has the opportunity to exercise and enjoy music and creative movement in our indoor gymnasium. Small muscle development and motor skills are developed along with eye hand coordination through classroom activities that involve cutting, coloring, beading, lacing, tracing and working with puzzles & writing

Our learning centers are filled with new materials and toys each and every week. There is always something special available to challenge and stimulate! We encourage children to explore materials and make personal discoveries through their play. Making choices, completing activities and developing all areas of development - physical, cognitive, emotional and social all come into play as children interact in the ever evolving centers. Exploring Table Sand, water, rice, salt, snow and beans are just some examples of what can be found in this exciting table! Cups, bowls, sifters, shovels, basters, sand wheels and a variety of other props are also placed in the table. These materials allow children to measure, pour, sift and estimate while role playing and discovering different tactile experiences.Top of page BlocksBuilding blocks in a variety of shapes, colors and sizes are provided to stimulate imagination and creativity. Unique props and visual aids are also added to enrichchildren’s interests and curriculum themes.Top of page Dramatic Play Role playing is encouraged and enjoyed using dress up clothes and theme related props and materials. Children have the opportunity to be active participants in a post office, a hospital, an ice cream shop, a grocery store and a kitchen - just to name a few of our dramatic play themes!Art Center Children enjoy manipulating playdough, cutting with scissors, painting on easels, gluing collages and coloring with markers, chalk, crayons and colored pencils. The art center promotes creativity and discovery with a process oriented theme. Mastery can be achieved when children have control over their work. This relaxing and fulfilling experience fosters creativity, self-expression and fine motor development.Top of page LibraryEarly literacy skills are developed and reinforced in a cozy, comfortable, quiet atmosphere. A variety of books are available for selection and are chosen to reflect the current curriculum themes, as well as tried and true favorites. Emergent experiences are exciting and build children’s concentration and appreciation for the written word. In this quiet area a child can look at books independently, with a friend or spend special time with a teacher!Top of page Puzzles & Games A variety of interesting and challenging puzzles, games and manipulatives are found in this center. Fine motor skills, social skills, memory and language are exercised while played in this fun area!Top of page Computer Center (Preschool Programs) - Challenging programs are available to introduce and reinforce a wide variety of academic concepts. Computer skills are learned within a child friendly and entertaining atmosphere.Top of page Science Center(Preschool Programs) - Our science center is full of opportunities to explore and discover. Learning about nature, discovering animals, planting seeds, observing ocean life or wondering what objects sink or float are just some of the exciting topics that are highlighted.Top of pageMath Center (Preschool Programs) - Our math center allows children to explore concepts introduced using a variety of challenging materials. Measuring tools, unifix cubes, geoboards, pattern blocks, links and other manipulatives provide opportunities to reinforce counting, adding, subtracting, sorting, classifying, sequencing, ordering skills and other challenging mathematical concepts.Top of pageGross Motor Area (Toddler Programs) - Children have the opportunity to jump, climb, crawl and roll in a safe designated space in the classroom. Cushion mountains, mats and a climbing treehouse are rotated in our toddler programs. Toddlers have the opportunity to use their energy and bodies in a fun and appropriate way.
